Balance Testing for MTBI
Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) Test
All test are performed for 20 second trials with the score equalling the number of errors that occured.  Therefore the higher the score the worst the performance.
Errors:
Lifting hands off the illiac crest
Opening teh eyes (when inapropriate)
Stepping, stumbling, or falling
Moving the hip more than 30 deg. of flexion or abduction
Lifting the forefoot or heel
Remaining out of the testing position for more than 5 seconds

Score is calculated by adding one (1) point for each error
A - Double Let Stance (Firm) (Eyes Open and Closed)

B - Single Leg Stance (Firm) (Eyes Open and Closed)

C - Tandem Stance (Firm) (Eyes Open and Closed)
D - Double Let Stance (Foam) (Eyes Open and Closed)

E - Single Leg Stance (Foam) (Eyes Open and Closed)

F - Tandem Stance (Foam) (Eyes Open and Closed)

Condition 1 - No Surround or Forceplate Movement

Condition 2 - Eyes Closed with no force plate or surround movement.

Condition 3 - Eye Open, Surround Moves, Force Place Stable

Condition 4 - Eyes Open, Force Plate Moves, No Surround Movement

Condition 5 - Eyes Closed, Force Plate Moves, No Surround Movement

Condition 6 - Surround and Force Plate Move, Eyes Open
