The Collegiate Sports Medicine Foundation – Center for College and University Catastrophic Sports Injuries, Prevention and Management is aimed at determining risk associated with intercollegiate athletics including a catalog of deaths related to athletic participation.  The center would research those deaths related to athletic participation for cause of death, circumstances, management, precautions and legal outcomes of such incidents.  Such circumstances would include heat, cardiac, blunt trauma, brain injury, transportation, lightning, illness and other conditions related to the death of such athletes.  The center would serve as a memorial for those athletes that have died while competing or preparing for interscholastic competition as well as serve as a reminder to those taking care of these athletes as to the precautions and protocols to prevent such occurrences.  Strategies for development, implementation, compliance, practice and follow-up to emergency situations.

The Center for College and University Catastrophic Sports Injuries, Prevention and Management will also address policies, procedures and protocols that attempt to minimize the risk of those athletes participating in college athletics.  The center would research and determine best practices for Emergency Action Plans and Protocols.  In addition the center would identify those practice guidelines relevant to the emergency management of such conditions as the spine injured athlete, stabilization techniques, equipment recommendations, transportation considerations, and issues concerning appropriate emergency services available.

The center would also identify protocols for dissemination of information following a potential catastrophic event such as the communication chain of command.  The administrative responsibility pertaining to an adverse event of an institutional athlete or staff member in an effort to accurately report conditions and findings to appropriate individual within the institution, family and community.

College & University Athletic Death Repository
The College and University Athletic Death Repository's focus is to provide a reminder for those responsible for the health care or the student-athlete engaged in intercollegiate athletics that there are inherent risk and consequences associated with participation.  This repository is in memory of those that died while preparing or participating in college athletics.  This places no judgement on individuals / institutions but simply as a memorial and educational tool as to prevent further unnecessary deaths from occurring.  Our thoughts, prayers and best wishes go to those families, sports medicine staffs and universities in this time of need.
