Center for College and University Sports Medicine Appropriate Medical Coverage & Risk Management

Description of Center
The Collegiate Sports Medicine Foundation - Center for College and University Sports Medicine Appropriate Medical Coverage is dedicated to addressing issues affecting the day to day athletic trainer, team physician and sports medicine professional.  This center will provide statistical information related to number of staff (by division), salaries, budgets, and services accessible for student athlete well fare. This center will also address such policies and procedures not otherwise determined in the other centers within the Collegiate Sports Medicine Foundation.

It is of importance that appropriate medical coverage is the underlying theme of all the centers as they each strive to provide resources for the clinician and university administration to make decisions to elevate the standard of care available to their student-athletes.

It is of importance to note that the data contained within this center is informal survey data submitted by head athletic trainers.  The information is for the intended use of other athletic trainers and sports medicine staffs to compare their situation to others of similarity.

If you have any suggestions or comments pertaining to the contents of this center please contact Brian Anderson at banderson@csmfoundation.org as we look to provide the best possible information and resources in an effort to improve the standard of care to the collegiate student-athlete.
Appropriate Medical Coverage for Intercollegiate Athletics (AMCIA)
The National Athletic Trainers" Association (NATA) - Recommendations and Guidelines for the Appropriate Medical Coverage of Intercollegiate Athletics (Revised May 2003)
The NATA, its Board of Directors and the AMCIA Task Force should be commended on a well developed tool that enables collegiate athletic trainers with another instrument to justify additional staff and services to the student-athlete.  It is well supported that this instrument is to be used in association with other materials and circumstances to support the need for additional staff.

It should be noted for the collegiate athletic trainer, especially in recent years with the expansion of practices and work out sessions as well as an ever increasing demand on administrative issues to carefully consider the time demands for administrative duties.  As outlined in the AMCIA document the following although not comprehensive should be factored into the the appropriate number of staff.
Budgets
Athlete Education
Coordination of Student Workers
Insurance
Pre-participation Physical
Medical Records and Injury Reporting (Coaches Reports)
Staff Education
OSHA
Facility Maintenance
Classroom Instruction
Clinical Supervision and Instruction
Drug Testing
Policy and Procedure Development
Scheduling
Team Travel Responsibilities
"Other Duties as Assigned" or dual responsibilities (Asst. A.D., SWA, Strength and Conditioning, Etc.,)
Event Distribution and Coverage Project
Staffing, Salary, Budgets
The following is a summary of information collected from various colleges and universities dealing with a wide range of topics.  This cumulative data is be shared with those that contribute to the data set for the purposes of enhancing services to the student-athletes for which they care as well as use an unscientific summary of the sports medicine programs throughout all divisions and settings.

In 1998 while at Nova Southeastern University (NAIA at the time with Two (2) Full-time ATCs and without FB), I documented events (practice and games) that occured at various times throught the week.  I defined "within" the normal working day" as between 8:00AM and 7:00PM as well as establishing holiday and weekend categoires for providing coverage.  You may view the results of this project by clicking HERE.

I would like to reproduce this information with a variety of schools from a variety of levels of competition.  Div. I-A, Div. I-AA, Div. I-AAA, Div. II, Div. III, NAIA and JC / CC.  We would like to gather inforamtion as to the times and days for which you (the ATC) and your staff are expected to provide coverage as well as who is proividing that coverage (GA, Full-time, Part-time, Etc.).

If you would be interested in participating in this project, please contact Brian Anderson at banderson@csmfoundation.org to set up a time to disucss this in detail as well as finding a system that works best for you to report these exposures.

In addition we would encourage all of you to participate in our Football Coverage Survey which we are currently collecting data.  Participate by clicking on the football below and complete the survey.
